What it is¶
fping sends ICMP echo requests to many hosts in parallel (round-robin) instead of waiting for each one in turn like ping. It is the quickest way to see which hosts on a subnet answer ICMP.
Sweep a subnet¶
fping -a -q -g 192.168.0.0/24
| Flag | Meaning |
|---|---|
-g |
generate targets from a CIDR range or start/end pair |
-a |
print only the hosts that are alive |
-q |
quiet: no per-packet output |
-u |
print only hosts that are unreachable (the opposite of -a) |
-c N |
send N pings to each host and show a summary |
-f file |
read targets from a file |
fping -c 5 -q host1 host2 host3 # loss and RTT summary for each host
fping -a -f hosts.txt # which of the listed hosts are up?
Hosts that block ICMP show as dead. For a more thorough scan use nmap (nmap -sn) or nping.
