dvdbackup copies the VIDEO_TS structure off a DVD to disk, for personal backup of discs you own. It needs libdvdread (and, for encrypted commercial discs, libdvdcss) to read past copy protection.

sudo dnf install dvdbackup libdvdread libdvdnav # or apt-get equivalents

Back up a disc

dvdbackup -i /dev/sr0 -o ~/Videos/dvd -M # -M = whole disc (mirror); creates a TITLE_NAME/ directory
dvdbackup -i /dev/sr0 -o ~/Videos/dvd -t 1 # -t N = only title N (skip extras/menus)

Turn the ripped directory into a playable ISO

mkisofs -dvd-video -udf -o ~/Videos/dvd/Movie.iso ~/Videos/dvd/MOVIE_NAME

Burn it back to a blank DVD

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0=Movie.iso

Ripping discs you do not own, or that you do not have the right to copy under local law, may be illegal even for personal backup purposes in some jurisdictions. Check your local copyright law before ripping commercial media.
